  1. A.Describe your agreement/disagreement on Noam Chomsky's Theory: Universal Language (UL)and Language Acquisition Device (LAD). Explain.

I may agree that everyone has the capacity to learn on their own, but honestly speaking, I disagree a little to Chomsky's theory, though his point of view are really convincing still I prefer to place my bet to B.F Skinner’s idea. Skinner believed that children must be taught all aspects of language, and that they learn the rules of their native language by imitating what they hear in their environment. Let me give some example, on a basic facts, most of the children wasn’t able to talk, speak or had a slow development specially when no one talks to them, another example, a friend of mine who were born in China, but lives in Manila since 1 year old, wasn’t able to master or even learn a little of Chinese language. The first language that he learns is syllable such as mama , papa, etc. and had soon master Filipino language. He tried it but wasn’t been successful he really finds it hard to learn Chinese. And those ideas are just some of the reasons which for me contraindicate the linguist Noam Chomsky theory which says that all people had an innate knowledge of the grammar of their native language. As it says no one had to specifically teach you the grammar of your native language; when you began speaking as an infant, you automatically produced utterances that were grammatical in your native language.

    B. Name three principles in teaching using the 4 Maxims (quantity, quality, relevance & manner)in linguistic and literacy development. Be sure to give example.

The 4 maxims in linguistic and literacy development must always be put on teachers mind. The quality, quantity, relevance and manner must never be compromised in order to provide learning to students. We have a number of principles of teaching, let me give 3 examples and connect it with the 4 maxims. First is “Encourage students’ faculty interaction”, this collaborative learning technique makes lessons easier for the students, the student where able to ask the teacher on their queries to make the lesson more meaningful. Second, “Promote active learning”, for the quality not to suffer of course this must be applied. The students develop competency and become critical thinkers, this provides interaction among students that provides good learning. And last on my list would be, “Giving prompt feedback. When a student raises a question, we should be able to give an immediate answer applying the maxims such as quantity, quality, relevance and manner. If were not able to give immediate answer, it should be given as soon as possible. We should always give factual information, and knowledge that could be added on their learning.

  2. 2A) The Language Acquisition Device (LAD) is a hypothetic module of the brain posited to account for Children's innate predisposition for language acquisition. Chomsky sees language development in the child as a separate aspect of knowledge, apart from the rest of cognition, or mental functioning. His Universal Grammar (UG) theory posits that the ability to learn grammar is hard-wired into the brain. The theory suggests that linguistic ability manifests itself without being taught and that there are properties that all natural human languages share.

I lean more on the idea that language is simply learned as other cognitive skills. I tend to regard language acquisition as a subset of man's ability to acquire knowledge and learn concepts. I consider language development occurs in the context of social interaction between the developing child and knowledgeable adults who model language usage and that language acquisition are shaped by the particular language environment in which a person is raised.

Although I agree that there are properties that all natural human languages share, it is hard for me to grasp that linguistic ability manifest itself without being taught. For example, I would not expect a child raised in isolation to be able to acquire language on his/her own. I would not expect a child to proficiently construct grammar with limited interaction and input from others and his/her environment.

2B) Principles of teaching using the 4 Maxims (quantity, quality, relevance & manner) in linguistic and literacy development:

    1. Clear communication with students.
Example: Intended outcomes and expectations are communicated effectively and discussed with students (relevance, manner & quantity). Give learning goals that the teacher knows can be achieved by the students (quality).

    2. In-depth knowledge of the subject area.
Example: If the teacher incorporates recent development in the field of study, a teacher must give adequate evidence (quality), give enough information of the recent development (quantity), explain how the new development is important to the discussion (relevance) and be clear and orderly in presentation (manner).

    3. Evaluates monitors and improves teaching practices.
Example: Regular feedback from students is sought. Feedback from peers to enhance teaching is encouraged. Encourage truthful, clear, relevant and informative as required feedback.

  3. A. As we all know, language is a part of ourselves from the day that we start to learn to speak until the day that we die. For me, I agree with Noam Chomsky's Language Acquisition Device, as we can observe in children who were born in a certain province particularly in a certain province in Visayas, for that child he/she is more familiar and it is easy for him/her to use their native language rather than the language that he/she hears once in a while. While with the Universal Language, which is defined as a matter of observation and experimentation to determine precisely what abilities are innate and what properties are shared by all languages, somehow I agree in this theory. For example, a child was born and raised in the Philippines then at the age of 3, together with his family they migrated to Australia then after 3 years, he can't understand Filipino language anymore. As with this, as the child was exposed to the language of a certain country he was able to learn and used it as his own language.

    B.1. Be Truthful
Do not say what you believe to be false.

    2. Quantity of Information
Do not make your contribution more informative than is required

    3. Stay on the topic
Make sure that your comments fit with what is being talked about - make sure your comments are relevant

  5. A. “The environment in which children grow up does not affect whether or not they will learn language, but simply WHICH language.” This is the statement from Noam Chomsky’s Language Acquisition Device (LAD). I believe that every child is capable of learning and developing language through the process of their development. The environment or the surroundings of the child will not entirely affect the development of the child if he/she will learn language but rather, in the question of which language. For example, I adopted a Canadian baby boy, he did not grow up in Canada but here in the Philippines, as he grow up, he will learn to acquire Filipino language which is tagalog. As long as he is exposed in tagalong language, then that child will learn and acquire speaking in tagalong when he grows up more. Learning language has not something to do with the environment because we are all capable of learning and progressing in language, but rather, only the tagalong language which exposed him by his environment. On the other hand, in terms of his theory regarding Universal Grammar (UG) I agree with his theory that linguistic ability manifests itself without being taught, and that there are properties that all natural human languages share [1]. We are naturally learning how to speak and acquire language by ourselves. It manifests itself as we grow and acquire development.

    B.
TAKING PRIDE OF TEACHING AS A PROFESSION – Positive outlook in life teaching as a profession and good attitude. Understand your task teaching as a profession and responsibility. (Quality)
UNDERSTANDING THE PRINCIPLES AND METHODS OF TEACHING – Know what to teach (Subject matter). Thorough grasp of the subject matter, Keep abreast and keep up with Subject matter new and updated trends (Quantity). Make sure that the lesson that you’re teaching is realistic and can be used in real life or somehow related to them based on life experiences (Relevance).
UNDERSTANDING THE LEARNER – Knowledge on the nature of children and understand them (Quantity). Know the different levels of understand intellectual and emotional maturity. Have genuine concern and sincere love understand for the children (Manner) [2].

    A. I believe on the theory of Universal Language by Noam Chomsky. Human beings on earth no matter what the original language is had the means of communication to understand each other. He proposed of course that all in the world have the same original language though this was unsupported by historical accounts. In my own belief, I believe this theory because as I can see the people around the world are trying to communicate with each other by using the general medium understood by everyone. I also agree on the on the hypothesis of Chomsky about Language Acquisition, wherein all children are born with the capacity to learn a language, since their areas of their brain responsible for comprehension and production have been identified. In that manner, in the classroom setting children should have been given authentic input, engaged them in a tasked-based learning and so on.
    B.
    1. Mastery of the Subject Matter to be taught.

A teacher should have provided students with appropriate input to the students in the learning process and enough information so to avoid confusion. It is the duty of the teacher to engage the students in a fruitful and meaningful learning.

    2. Use teaching procedures that are designed to promote specific aspects of quality learning.

The materials to be used in the language development of a student must be appropriate to the cultural context of every learner so that they can easily connect to that. Example, the Juan is famous for the Filipinos; so that the name should have been used in the formulation of a sentence.

    3. Clear Communication with students.

The teacher is responsible for creating a related flow of ideas throughout the communication process so as not to mislead the audience or the learners in the learning process. Also, the teacher should have been clear and unambiguous in the delivery of the speech materials so that learners can easily comprehend it.

  7. A. I am a Genetics believer so I am in agreement with Chomsky's Innatist Theory, which claims that we humans have an innate ability to acquire language. The use of language is already programmed in our genes so it gives us the capacity to know and to use different languages. I find Chomsky's assumption that "the environment in which children grow up does not affect whether or not they will learn language, but simply which language" very strong because it can be really observed in the real life setting. For instance, the reason why I speak Filipino is not because I am Filipino but because the ability to speak a language is already programmed in my genes and it so happens that I live in the Philippines so I speak Filipino. Also the assumption is observed among multi-linguistic individuals. The reason why they are able to speak various languages is that it is already programmed in their genes and what they did was they just developed and enhanced it.

    B. I must say that the 4 maxims in linguistic and literacy development should always be observed most especially in teaching-learning purpose. Teachers and the like should always incorporate Quality, Quantity, Relevance and Manner in their communication process so that learners/audience will learn and appreciate the information being taught to them. It is vital that the four maxims should be employed in the principles of teaching like (1) Teaching should be clear and not ambiguous. As much as possible, teachers should only impart information that is most relevant to his/her students in a very professional manner. (2) Teaching should be a two-way process. If the a teacher monopolizes the discussion, it will result to information overload and this is not healthy for the learners and besides what a teacher says might not be relevant anymore to his/her learners. (3) Teaching should encourage self-expression among the learners because in this way, relevant and quality information will become evident during the discussion and the teacher may correct or give comments on the manner by which the learners express their thoughts/ideas.

  8. 1. Ever since I first learned about the theory of Noam Chomsky in my first year of college, I have believed that the theory had many merits. Language is inherent to human beings and one of the many things that set us apart from the animal kingdom is our innate ability to use and learn different languages and use them to communicate. I agree with the concet of a Universal Language or Grammar because all human beings have the ability to learn a language even if they did not grow up hearing it. There is a construct that is built into our system that allows us to communicate correctly and effectively. Language Acquisition Devices is also a concept I agree with because it explains how children learn languge as they grow up, not because it as taught to them, but simply because they grew up hearing it spoken.

    2. The maxims are Quantity, Quality, Relevance and Manner. Three principles in teaching that utilize these maxims are as follows: Teachers must have mastery of their suject matter, because the best way to give quality education is to make sure that you, as an instructor, know the things that you are teaching your students. It is also important to know your subject matter if you want to be able to give your students the right amount of information. A teacher should also be socially aware, because no field of study remains stagnant for very long, and in order to make sure that learning is fun and current, teachers should always know what is happening in society and the subject they are teaching. Lastly, a teacher needs to be a good communicator. This last principle is the most important, in my opinion, because no matter how much information you give your students, no matter how good you are or how relevant it is, it will not amount to much if you cannot effectively communicate with your students.

  9. 2. A. I agree in the Theory of Noam Chomsky's Language Acquisition Device, that every child has capabilities to learn there native language but I a bit disagree because we should not forget that there is no two learners are same. For example, my niece is a 10 years old who born and live in United Arab Emirates. She can't speak tagalog even her mom teach her. She is having a hard time to speak tagalog even a basic tagalog word.

    B. 1. Be updated to the new trends about education / subject matter.
Example:The topic is about Dengue, in the book the mosquito that causes dengue is common during afternoon but according to the DOH now a days even in the morning there is also mosquito that causes dengue. (Relevance & Manner)

    2. Mastery of the subject matter
Example:A student asked a question related to the topic/discussion, being master the subject matter the teacher can answer and give enough information about the question of the student. (Quantity)

    3. Be Honest
Example:After the class you noticed that in your lecture the date of Edsa People Power is February 25, 1987 instead of February 25, 1986, The next day, be honest to your class tell them that you had a mistake and correct it. (Quality)

  10. 1. Linguistics is the words a person uses to express themselves. Talking, singing, and sharing with people they can converse with. Literacy is the written words a person reads or writes, not expecting conversation. Development of anything is the way it grows or changes as we do. Kids chat about kid things and read kid books. Adults usually only do with and for kids

From Noam Chomsky’s Theory, I agree from the one he postulated that humans have the ability to acquire language and we are genetically preprogrammed for it. Every child acquires language as they develop. The environment which a person grew up does not affect how a child learns language but on how to use this language. He stated that as long as the child is exposed to language, the tendencies in acquiring such will be activated.

    2. Teaching principles
    a.Quantity and the Mastery
In the linguistic and literacy development, since children cannot digest abstract or complex words, we need to point out what word we want to tell them merely by using objects to be able to identify what word is needed. As teachers we need to master what we want to discuss to the students so that they will be able to understand what we really mean based from the experiences that the teacher had.

    b. Relevance
What the teacher says should be relevant to what you should want to tell children. Avoiding of complex words will direct children the point or focus of what you want them to understand. So if you want to describe or tell the child the word window, you can point at the object that telling them what a window looks like.

    c. Communication should be clear
We need to create ideas and new knowledge so that we teachers can easily communicate to students. We need to have a focus and objectives before we teach so that we can easily evaluate the learning of our students to make necessary adjustments if learning is not met.

  11. A. I disagree to Noam Chomsky’s Theory. For me, the environment and social interaction still has a big impact in learning language. Based on my experience, I was born, stayed and study in Makati but I know how to speak our dialect which is Ilocano because I go there every vacation and learned it through communicating with the people there. Aside from that I can talk and understand also Pangasinense because we have cousins from Pangasinan and we learned it from them.
    B. 1. We cannot give what we do not have; we can give more if we have more.
Ex. As a teacher we should not only master our field of subject but also other subjects for us to share more to our students and for them to learn more from us.
    2. Connect lessons to students everyday life
Ex. Experience is the best teacher. by connecting your lesson to your students everyday life, they will understand it more because they will relate it to their own lives. Through that they will give meaning to your lesson and they will appreciate it more.
    3. Be prepared.
Ex. Before you enter the room of your class you should have the knowledge about your lesson for you to avoid dishonesty and giving them wrong information.

  12. A. I don't agree with Noam Chomsky's Theory. I think the environment can really affect the language development of an individual. Even if a person has her own nature of that language and not practicing that language, still she will not be able to learn how to use that specific language. There is still a need for practice and interaction using the language for her to learn it, which shows that environment has a role in the development.

    B. 1. We should be clear and concise with our instructions. By being clear and concise with the instructions can help the students understand the lesson better.
    2. The more we know, the more we can share. Having more knowledge means more learning that will take place. If teachers are more knowledgeable, the more they can give or impart information to students.
    3. Discuss things that are only significant to the topic and based on the level of understanding of the students. It is very important that everything we give to our students have relevance to the topic being discussed. The different terminologies used should be based on the level of their understanding for them to understand the topic well.

  14. UL and LAD. LAD deals more on how as our nature tounge and is language is universal based on Chomsky. Language universality is often describe on how a child learn language, imitation and often expose to a certain language take the nature of our tounge to talk and communicate.

    Quantity (be precise)
    Quality (be specific)
    Relevance (is appropriate to them)
    Manner (the construction of thought)

  15. 1. I do not agree with Noam Chomsky’s when he said that language and thought are separate and innate Lad, which is not a physical structure in the brain. As a nurse who studied the anatomy and physiology of the brain I know that brain controls thought and language with the stimulus on it. Thought cannot be separated from language as the language is the one that expresses the thought. Without thought there will be nothing to express through language.
    2. Using the 4 Maxims (quantity, quality, relevance & manner)in linguistic and literacy development.
As a teacher We should not only focus on how much we are teaching (quantity) but also the kind of our teachings (quality) and we should associate our teaching so that it will be useful and can be applied to our life (relevance) and we should present our teaching the way our student will easily understand by explaining it in their language and by giving examples (manner).
