8th Information Processing

Please answer the following:

1. What are the three phases of memory? Describe ways on how you have applied each of the phases of memory in your life. Give example.

2. How can understanding the phases of memory will help you be an effective educator/teacher?

  1. 1. The three phases of memory are the following: encoding, storing and retrieving. As we deal with our everyday life, we are using are memory on the things that we just do or say. For example, when I watch a certain TV program, as I am watching it, I tend to encode it in my mind by watching and focusing my attention to it. Then, as I watch it, it will be stored in my mind until it is finish, and after a few hours or days as I chat with my friends, I can tell them the story that I have watched days or hours ago by retrieving that certain story that was encode in my memory.

    2. Since as an educator you will encode, store and retrieve a lot of knowledge and information that you are going to share with your learners, it is important that you understand what does these phases of memory are all about. To be an effective teacher, you should know how to properly encode, store and retrieve information as you stand in front of your class because you may teach your students wrong information if you retrieve wrong information. Since students are dependent to their teachers, teachers must make sure that what they are teaching to their students are right and it is worth while.

Our ability to remember things have been considered as one of the important factor of our everyday life, several things that makes our existence extraordinary and some instances that we experience pain and devastation. All of these events of our life can remain and expunge in our memory. However, have we tried to ask ourselves how this memory develops or process in our brain? Let’s examine. Technically, encoding, storing and retrieving are the three phases of memory. These three phases is the main core in information-processing of human cognition, especially our ability to recall and remember things. For instance, when we are preparing for a quiz or examination, we review and recall the lessons that we have discussed in the past. With this, we read, memorize and encode the important things in our memory. We program our mind that we should remember these things because it might appear on the examination. By that, we already store information in our memory. We accumulate the information in our brain; however our memory cannot accommodate all these things that we want to remember especially when we reached the level of saturation of our brain that’s why we need to relax and rest our mind so that our memory can function well. After we encode and store information in our memory, on the day of examination, we will try to retrieve and recover all the information that we encoded and stored in our brain. By reviewing and scanning the past lessons, we were able to recall and retrieve information that we have placed in our memory that’s why we were able to summon up information.

    2. A higher level of education is associated with better mental functioning [1]. That’s why we need to better understand the three phases of memory by heart. It will help us to be an effective educator because it will keep our memory strong and mentally active. All the information on the subject matter will challenge our brain to remember everything. This is the reason why we say that once a teacher, always a student. We need to update the information in our memory; we need to keep on reading and mastering our subject matter so our brain will be involved in retaining memory. By this, we can effectively teach and impart all the lessons to our students because we are confident, well-prepared and we have sharp memory because we were able to process the phases of memory.

  3. 8. A. The three phases of memory are: encode, store and retrieve. There are some ways where I have applied these phases. First is while studying. Every time we go to school we learn new things and that new learning’s we encode it in our brain. Every lesson we learn we encode it then store it for us to use when exam will come. During exam that’s the time we retrieve it by answering the questions and provide the correct answer. Another way is when we I have a job. Since banking is my course in college good thing is that my first job is also in a bank and that is where I retrieve the lessons that I encode and stored during my college days.

    B. By understanding the phases of memory, an educator can have a clear picture on how to retain the knowledge they learned till they teach it to their students. It’s not just encoding it but you also have to identify how you are going to rehears it using the two variations of rehearsal. They should also know that the lessons they stored is not always set at Long Term Store but it will stay on Short Term Store first and thru rehearsal it will be transformed to LTS. Once they understand this process they can teach it to their students for new learning and to help them understand how information processing takes place.

  4. 1. Memory is defines as the retention of data over a period of time, which goes through encoding, storage and recall. As what is happening to us, when we heard a music, we initially process it and it effortlessly gets into our mind on a little period of time. We start encoding, step by step it was being stored in our mind. Without clearly noticing it we begun to sing lines of the song and sooner or later, the song will keep playing on our mind and we sung it as a means of recalling.

    2. This process of memory must be taught to future teachers, it was good knowing it. Through this knowledge we would know what would be the effective style for our learners for them to understand and learn lessons that we taught. We ca also share this information to our student so they could even have their own style of storing memory even on a short term or long term basis.

According to Encarta dictionary, memory is defined as the ability of the mind or of a person or organism to retain learned information and knowledge of past events and experiences and to retrieve that information and knowledge. Encoding, Storing and Retrieving are its three phases. One example to describe the three phases will be reading a book or an article. When I read, perhaps I encode the relevant information by either memorizing them, making mnemonics or finding patterns among them. Through those methods, I am able to store the information in my mind so that when the time comes for me to share those information, I can easily recall or retrieve them.

    2. Understanding the phases of memory is important for us educators because if we learn the art of encoding, storing and retrieving information, we can easily acquire knowledge from the things that interest us like reading books or listening to music for instance. If we master the skill of encoding information in our brain, it will give us the edge among others to easily understand and remember the information. Not only that, if we also learn the art of rehearsing like saying the encoded and stored information repetitively or posting the vital information on the wall so we see them regularly, I am pretty sure that it will have a great impact on how the way we teach and we should share these skills to our students so that like us, they can easily acquire the knowledge that we impart to them.

  6. 1.The three phases of memory are encoding, storage and retrieval. Encoding is when you get information or acquire knowledge into memory. Storage is the retaining of information so that later on it can be remembered. While retrieval is the utilization of the stored information (Murdock 1974). For example, we encode different information coming from our teachers through the discussion in class. After getting the information, storage takes place. The information that we encode will be stored now in our memory. By the time that those stored information are needed to be used it will now be on the phase of retrieval. Just like, when we become teachers in the future, everything that we have encoded and stored in our memory will then be retrieved for us to be able to apply what we have learned.

    2.As an educator, these phases are important for us especially in preparing ourselves to become an effective teacher. We teachers are responsible for the encoding, storing and retrieving of data. Before we impart knowledge to our students we need to have a sharp memory and effectively use these phases so that there will be a good flow of discussion in the class. By having a clear understanding of these phases, we teachers can also help our students on what ways they can effectively encode information and how they can store it easily.

  8. 1. The three phases of memory are encoding, storing and retrieval. In our life we continuously apply the three phases of memory. I particularly apply it when I attend my classes. I receive (encode) information that catches my attention, process and retain that information and remember (retrieve) it during exam or to use it when needed. I apply the three phases of memory even on simple situations like when somebody is introduced to me for the first time. I automatically encode the information about the person, store the information in my memory and retrieve the information the next time I meet the person again or when someone talk about him/her.

    2. As a teacher it is important to understand how information is processed by the mind. I want my students to effectively process and retain the information I teach and for them to recall it whenever needed. By understanding the phases of memory, it will help me to make my students focus and mentally process the activities in the class. It will help me choose strategies to use for my students to process information effectively. In knowing the cognitive activity involved will help me in controlling or guiding the attention of my students.

  9. 1. The three Phases of Memory are encoding, storing and retrieving. Encoding or registration: receiving, processing and combining of received information. Storage: creation of a permanent record of the encoded information. Retrieval, recall or recollection: calling back the stored information in response to some cue of use in a process or activity. For example in the activity that we do in our class, the picture in page 159 of Anonat. During that time I looked at the picture, I inspect the details(encoding) and then I memorize it (storing). As I draw the picture and write the details that is the time I'm retrieving what I encode and store in my mind. I would say that situation is only a short-term memory. My another example is for long-term memory. A year ago there was an event here in our house. That time every details before and the day of the occasion. I encode it in my mind. Now as I retrieve the information/details in that occasion, everything I still remember.
    When it comes to studies, we always wanted what we study would be stored in long-term memory but unfortunately some of it was stored only in short-term memory. In an event/occasion we have the choice where we store it, if it is in short-term or long-term memory.

    2. Teacher must understand the phases of memory, because teachers always encode, store and retrieve information. The primary task of a teacher is to master the subject matter, to do that teacher must properly encode and store the information or the subject matter. To be an effective educator, he/she must read/study the lesson all over again to retrieve all the information that are needed for the discussion, because there might some information that was stored in the short-term memory.

  10. 1. The three phases of memory are: encoding, storage and retrieval. Encoding is the process of inputing information into your memory; storage is the process of storing the information; and retrieval is when you recall the information from your memory. I use the phases of memory in my daily life. My work involves editing essays for Japanese students. The marking that we utilize to make our corrections have varied uses and when I learned about their uses I used the encoding phase of my memory and put the information in storage so I can retrieve it everyday for work.

    2. Understanding the phases of memory will be a big help once we become educators because it is important to know how the information we teach gets processed. By knowing the phases of memory, we can tailor our classes and the delivery of information to make sure that our students remember as much as possible.

  11. 1. The three phases of memory are the following encoding, storing and retrieving. In encoding, this has to do with the acquisition of the different inputs or stimulus for future use. Another, storing which the brain stores or saves the information in most level of exposure to the stimulus. Lastly, retrieving is the process of applying what has been stored in the memory. Example when listening to a lesson in classroom the memory encodes necessary information and stores the acquired knowledge which needs to maintain in the memory. Then when time comes needed to respond to daily classroom demands or to know what I have learned, I have the ability to retrieve the relevant information needed for learning to determine. Likewise, I have the edge to apply to whatsoever instructions or deliver what I have remembered.

    2. The phases of memory are very important for a teacher like me so as to create mastery in the delivery of lessons to my students. I need to harness and sharpen my memory so that I can become an effective teacher. It is very useful for me in remembering important details and information necessary for the development of my lessons.

  12. 1. The three phases of memory include encode, store and retrieve. To apply this in my life particularly during my studies, I read books and topics needed therefore I encode this in my memory so that my brain will process it so I can understand this based from the knowledge that I already acquired before. Once I understand the things I need then it is stored in my memory so that I will be able to use it during the time it is needed already, my brain will retrieve it once it is time for me to use it.

    2. Understanding the phases also like the statement above helps me during lecture time with my students. I study before hand so that I will be able to internalize the topics I need to discuss and understand them so that I can explain it in a more simple manner that my students will be able to understand based on their cognitive level. I need to have the mastery of the subjects being thought so it try to understand the topics and based this on life experiences so that I can give examples to students. It is then stored in my memory until such time that I will be using it during lecture time already where this is retrieve in my memory so that I can discuss the topics to my students.

  14. 1.Encode,Store and Retrieve are the three phases of memory. Definitely all memories and data whether good or bad are encoded in our memory there is part in our brain that stores it, its only made difference in terms of retrieving, data that are not significant or not relevant with my current situation will just be there but it will not be processed they way we want it. or sometime the de javu effect some situation maybe be occur in our memory because its resurfaces, or we read it again or some what trigger our brain to and process it that we have been there and done that.
    2. Of course part of a teacher is that having a good memory, example having a lot number of student is often hard to remember the capabilities and abilities of each student(specially if you don't practice record keeping)when time to grade encoding there be a hard time for you to give or assess each one of your student grades. So, it will be a bad habit not having a records, we should enhance our memory for us not to have a future problems.

  15. 1. The 3 phases of memory are encode, store and retrieve. In my life encoding is what the information, experiences are being input on me. Store is when I remember what happens to me, like good or bad experiences, learnings and knowledge in life. Retrieve is when I experience or encounter it again, I know now how to deal with it better because I am retrieving the lessons that I learned for me to know what to do.
    2. As a teacher my learnings when I am studying, my experiences in when I am a student and as a teacher is being encoded in my memory. It is stored in my memory because some of it are happy, good, memorable because some of it are learned the hard way. When I am teaching I retrieve what I have learned to share and teach to my students. Understanding this 3 phases of memory makes me a better person and teacher so that I will be effective to my students.
